MobLang: Encouraging basic language uptake European Minority languages using mobile phones

I’ve not updated some of our project work for a while – but I’d like to make mention of one specific project we are currently working on called MobLang.

The MobLang project is part of the EU Lifelong Learning Programme, and has funding to create and evaluate methods to help people living in communities where others speak minority languages learn the basics of those languages. An example language is Basque and an aim of the project is encourage non Basque speakers in the Basque area of Spain to pick up some basic Basque words, phases and cultural understanding.

The primary method of doing this will be to use people’s mobile phones to deliver a basic vocabulary / phrase course.

The project will not only provide Basque learning but also Irish/Gaelic in Northern Ireland, Albanian in Greece, Turkish in Greece, Turkish in Cyprus and Greek in Turkish Cyprus.

The project is currently surveying over 500 people in these various countries to understand more about their needs and the mobile technologies they use.

I will publish more information as the project goes forward.
