Dear Alastair,

Great post about a very interesting industry and one which can benefit hugely from the so called 'Web 2.0' and advancing technologies.

We also felt there is still a gap/ void to be filled and we are trying to do that with www.twidox.com. Twidox is a free, user generated online library of ‘quality’ documents that allows individuals and organisations to easily publish, share and search for them.

Documents on twidox are accessible to everyone online and will allow people to share their knowledge and help others with their work, learning, teaching and research.

The focus of the website is on professional and industry specific documents, research material, academic papers and articles, coursework and dissertations and data and statistics

The site archives and indexes every published text and makes it searchable to other users, free of charge. We will come out of private beta in October.

Mike has previously written about us (Twidox Is Like Scribd For Academics - Get 500 Beta Invites)

Best,

Nicholas

Glad you agree Brian and I like the video a lot - is this something that will be featuring at mLearn this year (just near the Ironbridge).

The flashcards - became a consumer tool in <a href="http://getawayphrases.com" rel="nofollow">getawayphrases</a> which doesn't offer the 1000 words I learnt - but a 100 useful words and phrases in 4 languages - French, German, Italian and Spanish. Also it is not iPhone compatible yet (See <a href="http://blog.luziaresearch.com/tag/iphone" rel="nofollow">here</a>).

Out uHavePassed platform will soon support both user generated flash cards and the iPhone though!

Brilliant. You've spotted one of those unexpected changes. We start by doing something familiar (in this case putting the paper cards onto a portable electronic device) but then it turns out that something unexpected happens and we do a totally new thing that we couldn't have thought up before.

Mobile learning is more than putting the paper onto a phone - it's a new way of learning.

I made a film in which I tried to capture this idea of new things. Watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1-q9M2cYnU and you'll see what I mean.

Thanks for this post. It's exciting and innovative. Where can I get your flash acrds and do they work on the iPhone? I need those 1000 words of German on my handy!

The problem is that usability and open do not seem to co-exist at the moment - and if we want to use the devices that people already have - then we have to focused on the most consumer friendly (usable) ones.

Android has a lot of promise - but I really have reservations that it will deliver on those promises - it will be a long wait yet - and I don't think it is a good bet for any investment in educational support - until it is proven and out there.

The iPhone / iPod touch is pushing forward consumer expectations about what they can do on the move - away from a computer - and I am sure that software that is first developed for the iPhone will be adapted for other devices as people without iPhones want to do similar things. However the great Apple marketing machine could win over the market conciousness - and as iPod replaced MP3 player - iPhone could replace smartphone.

Your comment about expectations about everyone having one is key in our outlook - and that is why we have created a platform that supports many different devices - Java, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and (soon) iPhone/iPod touch.

I think that open platforms will be a very major thing in the future evolution of not just mobile learning, but mobile technology in general. Sad that the Linux platform doesn't perform as well, but i'm sure Android will do it.

Focusing on singe devices like the iPhone or iPod cant be the solution in long terms, because you just cant expect everybody to get one.

At all i wouldn't focus on the platforms that much, but rather on developing platform independent applications like Java ones so everybody has the option to choose the platform of his choice.

Usable platforms will come on their own.
